SAVE $50 on GNSI Conference in Boulder - Only 3 Days Left

July 13-19, 2014: The Guild of Natural Science Illustrators meets in Boulder!

Albert Einstein once said, “The greatest scientists are always artists as well.” His observation was a good one. However, there is also a certain kind of visual artist—the scientific illustrator—who serves science by making the insights of scientists more accessible to others—by giving the creative artistry of scientists both form and beauty. Many of science’s top visual interpreters will be meeting in Boulder this July. If you love capturing nature on paper or with pixels, you may want to join them.  And what botanical artist doesn't love capturing nature on paper?

There are only 3 days left to benefit from the $50 Early Registration bonus. There are a lot of wonderful conference activities, including workshops, classes, lectures and field trips. AND, if you reviewed the site earlier, you'll find many new and helpful enhancements.

You don’t need to be a member to attend. But membership means an additional discount on registration (as much as $75 for the core conference). It so happens that a year's membership is as low as $75! The GNSI welcomes all who are interested in science art to become members."

Come and enjoy the camaraderie of fellow illustrators in a beautiful setting. The Conference is filled with presentations, workshops and field trips designed to inspire. Some concentrate on technique, with experts in drawing, painting, scratchboard, block printing, Photoshop, Illustrator, and digital devices sharing their expertise. Others focus on the gritty details of making a living in this challenging, but exciting career. With so many choices, participants can customize their learning experience under the inspirational setting of Boulder's Flatirons and modern CU campus.

Go to the Conference website : www.conf.gnsi.org for a great Schedule-at-a-Glance, to see the expanded information on each offering, and to register just in time to save $50. We look forward to seeing you there.

April 27, 2014 Member Meeting - Rocky Mountain Land Library

Eight members of the RMSBA met at Schlessman Family Branch Library for our monthly meeting. Members discussed the great work Becky Hall and Vanessa Martin are doing designing and fabricating our ASBA Conference gift, which is a brush holder made of native beetle-kill pine. The damage from the beetle creates a blue cast in a lot of the wood grain, making an interesting and beautiful pattern in the cut wood.

In addition, it’s an ecological use of the wood, which comes from standing dead trees which generally are not used for construction. Becky presented four different finish possibilities, and after discussion, a clear poly-acrylic coating was selected as being beautiful and easy to keep with good water resistance properties.

The focus of the meeting was a presentation by Kathy Imel and Jeff Lee, representatives of the Rocky Mountain Land Library, a unique organization dedicated to engaging people in the history and care of the land in our area. Kathy presented Jeff to the members.

The Amazing Growth of An Amazing Idea
Jeff Lee and Ann Martin share a marriage and their love for books, which has taken them on a number of journeys, perhaps the most successful is the creation of the Rocky Mountain Land Library. The concept began to grow after a trip to the London Book Fair, with a particularly important side adventure.

They went to Gladstone's Library, known until 2010 as St. Deiniol's Library, a residential library in Hawarden, Wales, founded by Victorian statesman and politician William Gladstone. In 1895, at the age of 85, Gladstone gave £40,000 (equivalent to £3.91 million today) and much of his own library to start this library’s holdings. He hauled most of the 32,000 books a quarter of a mile to their new home, using his own wheelbarrow! Now, over 250,000 books comprise the library holdings, and folks looking for research, respite and inspiration in their work come from around the world and stay in the 26-bed establishment.

Lee and Martin saw the wealth such a library offers and on their return home, they began collecting books about the Rocky Mountain region, with a commitment to encouraging greater awareness of the land and the communities who live on it. Over the ensuing years, their collection grew to over 30,000 books, old and new, documenting the way land in Colorado was worked, tended, sold, swapped, and cared for.

RMLL has received praise and recognition from around the nation, starting with local support (Channel 9), and spreading all the way to the east and west coasts (Bloomsbury Review, LA Times, and Huff Post to name a few).

Topic range is astounding, with books on modern beekeeping to traditional pruning methods, keeping goats in the city to The Poetry of Birds, a lovely tome on Fodder Plants and Pasture Plants, beautifully illustrated, cowboy poetry and works on art, craft, farming, mountain men, native peoples and more. So much is learned about the people who inhabited our lands, how they lived, what they cared about, how they interacted with each other, and how they husbanded the resources and treasures they found. Take a look at these:

Beekeeping - in the city!

Proper pruning beautifully illustrated

The City of Denver allows 2 goats per household

Inspiration drawn from the land's - and skies' - inhabitants

Serious information for the plainsman

Beautiful illustrations allow accurate identification

Cowboy's were often close-lipped, but remembered and embellished their lives with poetry. You can catch cowboy poetry in Denver and other cities at festivals and readings

RMLL, in partnership with the Tattered Cover, established an author series focused on the land and communities of the American West. Since 2001, they have hosted over 400 authors, including luminaries Barry Lopez, Bill McKibben, Lester Brown, Stewart Udall, Peter Mathesen and John & Teresa Kerry.
In addition, a thriving outreach program, the Kids & Educators Library in south metro Denver, has been established in partnership with Denver Water and the Thorne Ecological Institute.
After several years of searching for the perfect permanent home, Buffalo Peaks Ranch in South Park will soon house the RMLL collection. Founded in 1861 and recently designated a National Heritage Area, the ranch is a beautiful spot, the perfect home for a library dedicated to the conservation and appreciation of the land.

Beth Wood, a friend of Lee and Martin, photographed restoration work on the Buffalo Peaks Ranch in 2009, and some of the images are seen below. You can view more of her work HERE.

The vista that nurtures the permanent home for the RMLL, in South Park, CO, a few miles outside of Fairplay, CO, including waterway, main ranch house, a bunk house, and majestic mountains rising in the distance.

Once the rehabilitation of buildings is complete, the main house, attendant bunk houses, a huge barn, and massive concrete cattle stalls will all be re-purposed.

Clouds moving in fast demonstrate the capabilities for high plains to generate capricious weather, looking back through the bunk house, with large cattle sheds barely visible mid-right of the picture
The main library will be in the upper level of the wood-beam barn, residency settings located in the bunk houses and artist studios and work areas created in the cattle stalls.  General meeting and education areas are planned for the main house. There will be room to honor, preserve, research and expand the many activities that encompass the land.
Their commitment to our land, and their support of the arts that portray it are a perfect match for botanical artists. Click HERE to reach their informative website, and find your niche to participate in this terrific organization.

Name Change for Our July Exhibition

Vanessa Martin has secured a terrific gallery event for us in July of this year, at Square Deal Framing and Gallery J(click HERE for information about this gallery), July 15 through August 29th. This gallery has a number of exhibits annually, and we are delighted we are on this year's schedule.

The exhibit, originally titled "Botanical Art, with Altitude!," has had its name changed to "High on Botanicals" so that there is no confusion with the Small Works Exhibition scheduled in conjunction with this year's ASBA Conference here in Denver. For this exhibit, we are invited to submit any images which include botanicals. This is a little more open event than some, and is unjuried. You may submit up to 3 artworks, matted and framed in the manner you wish, and ready to hang with hanging wires.

We will hang at least one, but hope to be able to include more. The entry form allows you to number your images in order of hanging preference. Images labeled as "1" will be hung first, and then we'll hang the others in your order of preference once space is determined. We have room for 45 to 50 paintings.

Sometimes, a good read is the best inspiration...

When you are casting about for inspiration, or even just motivation, a good art newsletter is a nice place to start getting involved. To that end, we've added a new gadget to the right, called Online Newsletter Nirvana. There are three links there now, and my personal favorite is the one from Prescott, AZ, which is witty, full of information, and has a bit of humor.

There are also newsletters that talk about art news daily, weekly or monthly, more aimed at the general world of art as business, news and entertainment. There are a couple of those included here also.

How about contributing your favorite online art site for our Nirvana listing. Just click HERE and email the address. We'll do the rest, and thanks for sharing!

Day 31 - A Drawing a Day

Drawing on the Masters
It is only by drawing often, drawing everything, drawing incessantly, that one fine day you discover to your surprise that you have rendered something in its true character.
Camille Pissaro

Spring Radish, colored pencil on paper, Julie Terry. Julie tells us, "I think Easter radishes are such a reminder of Spring and that one of my favorite holidays is coming soon."

How About: Drawing a series of the plants that make you happy. Seasonal plants that speak to your heart, harvest bounty, the twigs bravely carrying on through winter...whatever moves you.

If you're looking for help in botanical drawing and painting, you can't go wrong with this book by botanical artist Ann Swan. This volume covers a start to finish method for botanical art and illustration.
Click HERE to see Ann's book online.

Summing Up: Well, you've done it! 31 days of drawing each day. It doesn't matter if it was 10 minutes a day, or hours at a time. You have ingrained your drawing skills into your very psyche, and your body has been trained to support the acts of drawing. Congratulations! We hope you have also gained the habit to draw so strongly that you'll feel sad when you don't draw every day. Then, you'll know your adventure as an artists is truly on its way. Thanks for participating. If you have images you still want to submit, please do. We'll post them right here!

Day 30 - A Drawing a Day

Drawing On the Masters
'To draw does not simply mean to reproduce contours; the drawing does not simply consist in the idea: the drawing is even the expression, the interior form, the plan, the model. Look what remains after that! The drawing is three fourths
and a half of what constitutes painting.
If I had to put a sign over my door [to the atelier], I would write:
School of drawing, and I’m certain that I would create painters.'
Ingres

Orchid, graphite and white on toned paper, Susi Olson. Susi says, "My orchid bloomed while I was in Montana! I sort of thought they were dead; seems to like it if I ignore it. It has bloomed like crazy." This paper is a neat choice for an orchid, with an earthy organic feel and a spotty texture that mimics the spotty appearance of some orchids.

How About: collecting sketch books or just small sheets of paper that you can use for drawing and sketching. There are bound books of paper in many hues, and paper manufacturers will often provide you with test sheets, to allow you to try before you buy. Go online to your paper manufacturer and see if they don't have an artist support program that provides quality variety papers, free or at low cost. It never hurts to ask. At least that's what my cat has told me, and she pretty much gets everything she wants.

Day 29 - A Drawing a Day

Frederick Franck from The Zen of Seeing:
I have learned that what I have not drawn I have never really seen, and that when I start drawing an ordinary thing, I realize how extraordinary it is, sheer miracle.

As seen through a window, vignettes of a trip in Vietnam, by Marj Leggitt. There are great notes and drawings here, and Marj used the time in vans to
create some lasting images for her memories.

How About: Outlines, outlines, outlines. Use outlines only, also called a contour (following edges), or a cartoon (full outlines), to document things around you: landscapes, cityscapes, architecture, fruits, vegs, flowers, cacti, cats, dogs, lizards....

Click HERE to discover a lot of ways to use contour lines.

Day 28 - A Drawing a Day

Drawing On the Masters
'Drawing and color are not separate at all; in so far as you paint, you draw. The more color harmonizes, the more exact the drawing becomes.
When the color achieves richness,
the form attains its fullness also.'
Paul Cézanne

Shells and Leaves, mixed media, by Libby Kyer. I cannot walk the beach without picking up detritus. Leaves fresh, leaves baked, shells broken and whole, bits of wood, exoskeletons, seaweed, driftwood and small not-so-alive-anymore animals, like tiny fish and seahorses, are all interesting. So when it's too hot for the beach (doesn't happen often) or rainy, I like to draw the stuff I've collected.
So I have many drawings of flotsam and jetsam.

How About: Collecting the bits that interest you, allow them to dry, and mix and match them into drawings of interest.

This book guides you through a series of exercises that help you define your own style. We all worry about having individual style, when in fact, your personal style comes pre-packaged in your psyche! However, how you display that, where you want to tweak it, and art processes that will show you what you know, what you don't know, and where you might want to go are all included.

Day 27 - A Drawing a Day

Drawing On the Masters

A work of art goes through many phases of development, but in each phase it is always a work of art. (Therein lies the importance of sketches.) A work of art is finished, from the point of view of the artist,
when feeling and perception have resulted in a spiritual synthesis.
Hans Hofmann

Roses, mixed media, Marj Leggitt. Great study sheet of roses, analyzing form, thinking about composition, noting details, and indicating colors.

How About: Trying this exact exercise yourself. You'll want graphite, watercolor or colored ink (brush tipped disposable pens are great too), and a bit of time to plan things out in your sketchbook.

Day 26 - A Drawing a Day

Drawing On the Masters
Everything starts with a dot.
Wassily Kandinsky

A great bird's foot, created by a member at the DMNS bird drawing session in February.

How About: Stepping out on a limb, like our bird friends do every day, and looking at your specimens from a different vantage point. Perhaps from above, perhaps from a very low perspective so that specimens take on a monumental appearance, etc. New perspectives lead to - well - new perspectives! It's a good thing!

Day 25 - A Drawing a Day

Drawing On the Masters
The very act of drawing an object, however badly, swiftly takes the drawer from a woolly sense of what the object looks like to a precise awareness of its component parts and particularities.
Alain de Botton

Black Bear Cubs, graphite on paper, Vanessa Martin. "Spent a few hours sketching today, these Black Bear cubs caught my attention.  Only downside was I parked myself unknowingly next to the button that when pushed by at least 100 children, made the horrible sound of a bear cub who lost its mother...it was pathetic.  Looking forward to my next sketching adventure...minus the sound effects. Thanks for letting me share." Vanessa
How About: Finding a drawing buddy. Having someone to plan with is great, because you'll be more likely to meet your commitments to yourself to draw, and you have the benefit of feedback and support from another artist.

I find having someone set exercises for me to do is really helpful, because I think it's hard for any artist to set themselves a task that doesn't already fit in their concept of what they want to do. Having a stranger lay out some plans encourages the artist to step outside their own art box once in awhile, to refresh and renew our desire to draw, draw, draw. Check this book out for some great exercises.

Day 24 - A Drawing a Day

Drawing on the Masters
-on Leonardo da Vinci...
It is often said that Leonardo drew so well because he knew about things; it is truer to say that he knew about things because he drew so well.
Sir Kenneth Clark

Eggplant "pumpkins", colored pencil on toned paper, by Libby Kyer. I have always wondered what these little "soft pumpkins" were, and finally looked them up. They're a member of the eggplant family, and hail from Africa. Very popular now for ornamental uses, they look like a little bumpy pumpkin.

How About:  Hit the flower shops to find something really unusual. Create a series of drawings based on one species, doing each image in a different medium - graphite, colored pencil, pen, ballpoint pen and then a mix of all. You'll have five drawings that will make a lovely grouping.

Day 23 - A Drawing a Day

Drawing on the Masters
Learn to draw so effectively that it becomes second nature – almost another language. Carry a sketchbook at all times.

The EcoLodge, Viet Nam, mixed media by Marj Leggitt. Having such an intimate near item - the settee - with such a grand backdrop - the mist-shrouded mountains and distant - invites us to participate in this amazing view. This is a terrific drawing that speaks to the true value of drawings - powerful and inviting.

How About: Set up a scene with very near and very far objects and draw it, concentrating detail in the foreground, pushing atmospheric perspective for objects in the rear. You can draw a group of flowers or a scene in your garden, on your block, or all the way to the mountains. Have some fun!
